Description
  1. 1 videodisc (DVD) (29 min.) : sd., col. SP; 4 3/4 in.
Summary
  1. Tina Packer speaks with Newsday critic Linda Winer. English-born Packer is the founder, president, and artistic director of Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, Massachusetts, which is dedicated to the authentic performance of the works of William Shakespeare, as well as new works that emulate Shakespeare's social and political focus. The company trains actors in classical technique, and runs educational programs for young people in order to enhance their discovery of Shakespeare's "truths in the everyday world." Packer traces the history of the Shakespearean company she founded with 15 American actors and five master teachers in 1978, describes what inspires her about Shakespeare, and discusses her plan to recreate the Rose Playhouse, the lost London theatre of Shakespeare's day, in the Berkshires. She also expresses her views on the purpose of the theater, Shakespeare as a "radical" playwright, and why she feels women are eminently suited to be theatrical directors.
