Summary
Janet Hill moderates a panel discussion about the new musical Blind Lemon blues. Panelists include playwright Alan Govenar; playwright/director/choreographer, Akin Babatunde ; Alisa Peoples Yarbrough and Lillias White. Govenar speaks about the history of the blues. Babatunde talks about why he focused on Blind Lemon Jefferson and his influence on other musicians such as Leadbelly and Carl Perkins. Govenar talks about the significance of blues music. Alisa Peoples Yarbrough talks about the significance of women and the blues and performs Indiana Harbor. Lillias White talks about how she got involved in Blind Lemon blues. Babatunde talks about the musical staging and choreography for the show and Govenar talks about the role of Norma Miller in creating the choreography for the show and the few facts that we know about Jefferson's life. Rather than recreating Blind Lemon Jefferson they strived to create a metaphor for the era of the 1920s.
