Summary
  1. Designer and director of theater and film Julie Taymor discusses her career with Newsday critic Linda Winer. Taymor's interest in the theater developed at an early age. At eleven she became involved with the Boston's Children's Theatre, and at 16 went to Paris to study with at the mime school of Jacques Lecoq. Taymor speaks about her design and direction of many global productions of The lion king since it first opened on Broadway in 1997. She discusses the challenge of translating not only the language of the show, but also adapting the humor to suit audiences of various cultures, and how she was able to achieve her artistic vision while working for its corporate producers, the Disney Company. Taymor speaks about her travels in Sri Lanka and Indonesia; her studies in mythology and folklore at Oberlin College; her direction of the 2002 motion picture Frida, about the artist Frida Kahlo, and Titus (1999), an adaptation of Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus, on which she collaborated with her partner of over 20 years, composer Elliot Goldenthal; her work in the opera; and her status as the first woman to receive a Tony Award for directing a musical.
