  2. At least one other version of Gaffer Gray was produced for the Juvenile Library in 1806; the title of the copy at the Morgan Library reads, "fit to be chanted at Midsummer."
  3. William Godwin initially established his Juvenile Library in the name of Thomas Hodgkins, a man he employed to run the bookshop. When Hodgkins was discovered pilfering shop profits, Godwin managed to have him removed from the business, despite the fact that it legally belonged to Hodgkins. The company was soon reestablished under the name of Godwin's second wife, Mary Jane (cf. St. Clair's The Godwins and the Shelleys).
  4. The poem appeared in Thomas Holcroft's novel The Adventures of Hugh Trevor (1794-97), and is apparently an original creation of Holcroft's.
