Summary
Raw interview footage used for the documentary Broadway, the American musical. Stage and screen actor and comedian Nathan Lane begins by discussing the plot of the Broadway musical comedy The producers, in which he starred as the down-on-his-luck producer Max Bialystock. The show, written by Mel Brooks and based on his 1968 film of the same name, concerns two theatrical producers who scheme to get rich by overselling shares in a Broadway flop. Lane speaks about the number Along came Bialy, which is based on a real producer with whom Brooks worked; the courtroom scene in which Max admits his guilt; his favorite scene in the show; his view of the show as Brooks' tribute to the musical comedy of the past; why he believes the show was so well received; the ever-changing tastes in the musical theater; the audience response to the show in relation to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001; his early influences, which include Laurel and Hardy, Jackie Gleason and Art Carney, and the singing of Rex Harrison and Robert Preston in the cast albums of My fair lady and The music man, respectively; the performances of Zero Mostel as Bialystock and Gene Wilder as Leo Bloom in the film version of The producers; Mostel's brilliance as a comic and dramatic stage actor, and whether he feels he is carrying on Mostel's legacy. Lane then relates several humorous anecdotes about Mostel onstage. Lane discusses the Broadway opening night; unsuccessful shows with which he was involved; the significance of the musical currently, and why he finds the form so meaningful; the changes on Broadway; the Broadway musical's development as an American art form; Broadway's appeal to younger audiences; the "miracle" of creating a great show like Gypsy or Guys and dolls; some of the cultural sensibilities that gave rise to the musical; gays and Broadway; the Broadway show La cage aux folles; the experience of greatness in the theater; the "second cardinal rule" of producing; his influence, and the influence of the theater, on people; and what he sees as "sacred" about the theater.
