Summary
Philip Himberg, Artistic Director of the Sundance Institute Theater Program, moderates a panel discussion about the musical Grey Gardens, which is interspersed with scenes from the musical. Panelists include lyricist, Michael Korie; book author, Doug Wright; director, Michael Greif; and composer, Scott Frankel. Based on the cult film Grey Gardens released in the 1970's, Scott Frankel talks about what inspired him to take this documentary film and turn it into a musical. Philip Himberg talks about how the Sundance Theater became involved with the musical, offering space for the musical to develop and the panel describes the process of developing the musical in the Sundance Theater space in White Oak, Florida; Frankel describes the move to a rehearsal space at Playwrights Horizons. Doug Wright discusses how he came to write the book, his responsibility to the people and the source material in the writing of the book, how to honor the movie, as well as his meeting with Albert Maysles, one of the original documentary's filmmakers. Michael Korie provides background to the mother and daughter story of Grey Gardens and Michael Greif introduces the cast and talks about the process of double casting in the play, as well as the different roles of the director through the process of development. Panelists discuss how two very different acts were fit together and then each panelist talks about the most thrilling moment in the journey through development of this musical.
