Summary
  1. A symposium offered in conjuction with New York City Opera's production of Carl Orff's Carmina burana and Kurt Weill's Seven deadly sins, both of which have raised issues about the relationship between art and politics. Panelists include Michael Kater, Professor of History at York University in Toronto; Kim Kowalke, President of the Weill Foundation and Professor of Musicology at the Eastman School of Music; Walter Hinderer, Professor of German at Princeton University (moderator); Richard Taruskin, Professor of Music at the Univeristy of California, Berkeley; John Rockwell, Director of the Lincoln Center Festival and former music critic, cultural writer and editor at the New York Times; Anne Bogart, stage director for the Seven deadly sins; and Donald Byrd, choreographer for Carmina Burana. After individual presentations given by Michael Kater and Kim Kowalke, the panel engages in a discussion of music, politics, twentieth-century history, the relation between an artwork and its creator, and the socio-cultural context of musical performance and reception. This is followed by a lively question and answer session.
