Description
  1. 221 items
Summary
  1. Correspondence and photographs of the Belevskii-Zhukovskii family. Items mostly relate to Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna Romanov (1864-1918). Correspondence consists of many short letters and telegrams.
  2. The bulk of the material in the collection dates from the late 1890s to the early 1900s. The material remains in the order it was at the time of receipt. Two possible series have been identified should the collection be further processed at a future date. The series are Personal Memorabilia and Pictorial Works. -- The Personal Memorabilia series contains a copy of Robert Wagner's Parsifal, and an assortment of letters, cards, and souvenir albums. The numerous telegrams, mostly exchanged between Countess Maria Petrovna Belevskaia-Zhukovskaia and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, are included as well. -- All photographs and drawings are included in the Pictorial Works series. Most of the photographs are of Elizabeth Feodorovna after she began her work in the convent. Tsar Nicholas II and his immediate family are in several of the remaining portraits. The drawings are mostly found in Vasilii Andreevich Zhukovskii's family album.

Biography
  1. The Belevskii-Zhukovskii collection consists of 220 items that have been owned by several generations of the descendants of Vasilii Andreevich Zhukovskii (1783-1852), Russian Poet, translator and tutor to the future Tsar Alexander II.
  2. Zhukovskii was the foremost Russian poet of the 1810s. The family became directly linked to the Romanov family in 1870 through the morganatic marriage of Zhukovskii's daughter Aleksandra Vasilevna Zhukovskaia (1844-1899) with Grand Duke Aleksei Aleksandrovich of Russia (1850-1908). The Grand Duke was the sixth child and fourth son of Alexander II (1818-1881) and Maria Alexandrovna (1824-1880). -- Aleksei Alekseevich (1871-1932), son of Aleksandra Vasilevna and Aleksei Aleksandrovich, was created a Count of the Russian Empire with the name of Belevskii- Zhukovskii by his uncle, Tsar Alexander III (1845-1894), on March 21, 1884. More than half of the material belonged to Aleksei Alekseevich's first wife Princess Maria Petrovna Trubetskaia (1872-1954) who became the first Countess Belevskaia-Zhukovskaia -- The fifth son of Alexander II and Maria Alexandrovna, Sergei Alexandrovich (1857- 1905), married Grand Duchess Elizabeth Fyodorovna, a granddaughter of England's Queen Victoria. The couple had no children, but adopted Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich (1891-1941) and Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna (1890-1958), the children of Sergei Alexandrovich's brother, Pavel Alexandrovich (1860-1919) -- Alexander Alexandrovich, Tsar Alexander III, and his wife, Maria Fyodorovna, were the parents of Tsar Nicholas II.
