A brutal story, yet including some lyrical and even satirical moments, this opera was once banned in the former U.S.S.R. Katerina, unhappily married to a merchant (Zinovij), takes one of his workmen (Sergey) as her lover. She poisons her obnoxious father-in-law (Boris), and with Sergey's help, kills Zinovij.
