Description
1 videodisc (NTSC) (67 min.) : sd., col.; 4 3/4 in.
Summary
A compilation of docudrama, satire, musical revue, dance, and improvisation, Gaudeamus charts the life of first-year conscripts assigned to a battalion comprised of former criminals, dropouts, and persecuted minorities. Incorporating mime, ballet, and cabaret to depict the triumph of the spirit over regimentation, it is a powerful metaphor for the chaos and banality that characterized the end of the Soviet period. Beginning with a warmup class, the performance is interspersed with a panel discussion moderated by Tony Randall. The panelists are Lev Dodin, artistic director of the Maly Drama Theatre of St. Petersburg and his translator, Michail Stronin, Maly Literary Director. Topics discussed include the adaptation of Gaudeamus as well as the history of the Maly Drama Theatre.
