Description

Summary
The program begins with composer Ronald Catalbiano and director Benjamin Twist discussing their collaboration on the chamber opera Marrying the hangman, from Margaret Atwood's poem. They discuss the historical basis of the work, which depicts an 18th-century Quebec woman who saves herself from execution by persuading the man in the next cell to marry her and become the hangman. They also discuss the opera's three roles (the condemned woman, an 18th-century narrator, and a 20th-century narrator), which are played by one singer, and how the characters are differentiated musically and in the staging. The discussion is followed by a performance of the opera.
