Summary
Profile of the Silver Belles, five tap dancers who performed in 1930's Harlem at the Apollo and Cotton Club and reunited in the 1980s to continue performing together. This intimate documentary follows the women through rehearsals, performances and their daily routines. Through interviews and archival footage the film explores their careers and life stories, touching on the Harlem Renaissance, struggles against racism and segregation, the Apollo chorus girls' strike, and the disappearance of chorus lines in the 1940s, celebrating the dancers' vitality and endurance. The disc also includes interviews with the director, who discusses the making of the film and her feelings about the subjects, and with the composer who speaks about how his original music echoes the music of the periods covered in the film. Both interviews last ca. 10 min. Special features also include a photo gallery and bonus music tracks and a dance class teaching the legendary Shim Sham Shimmy.
