- Summary
- This panel discussion is structured around Merce Cunningham's statement of four key discoveries that influenced his career: the independence of music and dance, chance operations, film and video, and computer software for developing choreography. Cunningham speaks about the four discoveries and shares reminiscences of past performances at BAM. Laura Kuhn discusses John Cage's influence as music director of the Cunningham company, and controversy over the use of rock music in the piece Split sides. Carolyn Brown addresses the use of chance operations and how they differ from improvisation. David Vaughan speaks about Cunningham's collaborations with filmmakers Charles Atlas and Elliot Caplan, and shows a clip from the dance film Locale. Thecla Schiphorst speaks about the development of Life Forms software and Cunningham's use of it, and shows a clip from a news report including interviews with Cunningham, dancers Alan Good and Emma Diamond, and critic Joan Acocella. The program ends with a question-and-answer session.
