Summary
Raw interview footage used for the documentary Broadway, the American musical. Dancer and choreographer Graciela Daniele discusses her career, with emphasis on her experience as a dancer who worked with choreographers Michael Bennett and Bob Fosse. Topics of discussion include her childhood in Argentina and ballet studies in Paris; the impression made on her by the musical West Side story, which she first saw in Paris, and her decision to come to New York as a Broadway performer; dance as a means of telling a story, and the choreographic innovations of Jerome Robbins and George Balanchine; ballet in relation to Broadway dancing; the requirements of dancers in Broadway shows; the "formula" of the musical theater; the use of tap dance to convey a story in the dance musical Bring in da' noise bring in da' funk; the dearth of innovation in Broadway dance; the "aura" of Broadway; the history of the musical; working with choreographer Michael Bennett as a performer and assistant on such shows as Coco, Promises, promises, and Follies; Bennett's choreography and personal qualities; her feelings as a young dancer in Follies, which is about older dancers reflecting on their youth; Bennett's choreographic influences; her first rehearsal for Chicago working with Fosse on the number All that jazz; Fosse as a director, aspects of his personal life, and his influence as a mentor and teacher; the deaths of Bennett and Fosse; composer Stephen Sondheim and his relationship to Broadway; Bennett's choreography, and personality, in comparison with Fosse's; Irving Berlin's score for the musical Annie get your gun; her career as a Broadway "success story"; what she sees as the purpose of theater; the future of Broadway; choreographer Agnes De Mille, and her advocacy on behalf of choreographers.
