Summary
  1. This program features a panel discussion of The Dreyfus affair, interspersed with performances of arias and duets from the opera. Panelists discuss the historical basis for the work, the case of French Jewish army officer Alfred Dreyfus, who was falsely convicted of treason in 1894, and who went on to be defended by, among others, author Émile Zola. Librettist Whyte discusses the affair as a precursor to the Holocaust, director Alley describes the staging of the New York City Opera production, and conductor Robert Duerr talks about the music, giving particular attention to composer Meier's aleatory notation and how it is executed. The program concludes with a brief question-and-answer session with the audience.
