Summary
  1. This program provides a snapshot of the range of Richard Rodney Bennett's musical activities, from classical composer to writer of film scores to cabaret artist. The first part of the program includes a performance of Claudie Debussy's composition Syrinx, for flute, viola, and harp, followed by a performance of Bennett's Sonata after Syrinx, composed for the same instruments. The second part includes a program of popular songs about New York written during the 1920s and 1930s, with Bennett accompanying singer Mary Cleere Haran on piano and sometimes partnering her vocally. Haren also introduces the songs, emphasizing the contributions of the songs' lyricists. During a conversation with Bennett between the two musical offerings, the composer discusses his upbringing and musical training in Great Britiain after the Second World War, and his work in various genres. An extended film clip from the film Murder on the Orient Express, with music by Bennett, is screened.
