Description
1 videodisc (NTSC) (80 min.) : sd., col.; 4 3/4 in.
Summary
This program includes a panel discussion on the 2002 New York City Opera production of Dead man walking, interspersed with performances of arias and duets from the opera. Panelists discuss the genesis of the work, the composer and librettist's collaboration on its creation, and their placement of the opera more in the grand than the minimalist tradition. The composer discusses his development of musical themes for each of the characters and the influence of southern folk songs on the music. The director discusses the experience of working on his first opera, and the singers talk about their characterizations and about researching their roles which, in Packard's case, included a visit to Angola Prison's death row.
