Summary
  1. This program includes panel discussions of two new productions in the 1998 New York City Opera season, interspersed with performances of arias and duets from the operas. The Partenope panel discusses the baroque tradition in which composer George Frideric Handel worked, the sense of the sacred and metaphysical as conveyed by the production's director and set designer, and the singers' experience of Handel's musical structure. The Tosca panelists discuss the transposition of the opera's setting to 1930s Fascist Italy, the work's portrayal of political oppression and characters driven by obsession, and composer Giacomo Puccini's gift for melody and for dramatic gesture.
