Description
  1. 1 videodisc (NTSC) (84 min.) : sd., col.; 4 3/4 in.
Summary
  1. This program includes panel discussions of two New York City Opera productions for the 1998 season, Christoph Willibald Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice and Engelbert Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel, interspersed with performances of arias and duets from the operas. The Orfeo ed Euridice panel discusses the 18th-century atmosphere of operatic reform in which Gluck and librettist Ranieri de Calzabigi created the piece, the various revisions the work has undergone since it was written, the New York City Opera's adherence to Gluck's original version, and the director's emphasis on movement in the production. The Hansel and Gretel panelists discuss the opera's employment of German folklore and songs, the setting of the Brothers Grimm tale among New York's late 19th-century immigrant community for the New York City Opera production, the process of translating the opera into English, and the challenges of English-language opera for singers.
