Description
1 videodisc (NTSC) (63 min.) : sd., col.; 4 3/4 in.
Summary
This program features a panel discussion of two Lincoln Center Festival productions of Ji Junxiang's 13th-century Yuan dynasty play Zhao shi gu er (The orphan of Zhao), one presented in the original Mandarin and in a traditional ceremonial style, and the other presented in English and staged in a mixture of eastern and western styles. Three scenes from the Chinese version are interspersed with the panel discussion, while scenes from the English-language version have been edited from the recording. Director Chen Shi-Zheng describes the divergent manner in which he staged the two productions, and discusses his mission of bringing classics of Chinese drama into the world canon. Stephin Merritt, composer of music for the English-language version, discusses his musical influences and choice of instrumentation, and David Patrick Kelly, who performs in the English-language version, talks about learning the movement and body language-based Chinese performance style.
