Summary
  1. Promotional tape with excerpts from the six-hour PBS documentary. A new generation of musicals, beginning with West side story, choreographed and directed by Jerome Robbins with music by Leonard Bernstein, "revitalized" the American musical. Bob Fosse injected "sexy cynicism" in Chicago, while Michael Bennett created his blockbuster hit A chorus line. In 1997 the Walt Disney Corporation produced its first Broadway musical, based on its animated film The lion king, and ushered in the redevelopment of 42nd Street.

  1. Broadway, the American musical, which aired on PBS in October 2004, is a documentary chronicling the entire history of the Broadway musical. Each of the six episodes covers a different era in American history, and features the Broadway shows and songs which defined the period. The series draws on feature films, television broadcasts, archive news footage, original cast recordings, still photos, diaries, journals, first-person accounts, and on-camera interviews with many involved.
