Description

Summary
This program spotlights the Cuban Compañia de la Danza Narciso Medina, making its American debut after ten years of performing in Cuba and around the world. A conversation with company artistic director and choreographer Narcisio Medina is interspersed with performances of three dances, one of which, Estaciones (seasons), was commissioned for the program. The work's composer, Joel Diamond, joins the panel to discuss his long-distance collaboration with Medina, and the choreographer talks about his dance training and the start of his choreographic career in Cuba with the Kafka-inspired Metamorfósis, which is also presented here. Medina's musical concept for the third piece on the program, Musica del cuerpo, is based in Cuba's African roots, and includes vocalizations in an invented language as well as drumming and other percussion work by the dancers. Moderator Suki John translates for Medina and describes some of the bureaucratic difficulties his company had gaining permission to travel to the United States.
