Summary
  1. This program includes panel discussions of two New York City Opera productions, interspersed with performances of arias and duets from the operas. The first panel focuses on a new production of George Frideric Handel's Rinaldo, co-directed and co-designed by Negrin and Baker. The panelists discuss the process of artistic collaboration, the early 18th-century English context around the creation of the opera, and the possibilities for interpretation and psychological nuance provided to singers by Handel's formal musical structures. The subject of the second panel is the revival of Corsaro's production of Sergey Prokofiev's The love for three oranges (Liubov k trem apelsinam), originally mounted for Glyndebourne Festival Opera 1982 and first performed at New York City Opera in 1985. The panelists discuss the production's French Revolution setting, its employment of Italian commedia dell' arte style, Maurice Sendak's designs, and the vocal challenges posed by Prokofiev' s music.
