Stein speaks about the beginnings and early days of The New Dance Group, including its political aspects; Berke speaks about how he came to join The New Dance Group; Manings speaks briefly about The New Dance Group's student body and curriculum; Remer, McKayle, and Primus each speaks about how he or she came to join The Dance Group; Manings speaks about the Group's scholarship program [gap]; McKayle and Berke each speaks about the benefits of the encouragement he received from the Group, including with respect to their economic circumstances; Stein and Manings speak about the Group's role in creating an audience for dance; Primus speaks about the support she received from the Group, including an anecdote about a costume Jane Dudley created for her; McKayle speaks about his work Games, in particular the circumstances of its creation; Remer speaks about her family's dance background; Manings speaks about the Group's acquisition of its building, at 254 W. 47th Street; various factors that affected the Group during the 1950s and 1960s [ends abruptly].

  • Recording of a panel discussion held by the New Dance Group, titled Dance: a multi-faceted dance community, moderated by Muriel Manings on June 12, 1993, at the Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse, at Lincoln Center, in New York City. The panel was part of a three-day joint conference of The Congress on Research in Dance and The Society of Dance History Scholars, titled "Of, by, and for the people," hosted by the Dance Collection of The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center, on June 11-13, 1993. The panelists are Rebecca Stein, Stanley Berke, Jane Remer, Donald McKayle, and Pearl Primus. The souvenir program for The New Dance Group Gala Concert held on June 11, 1993, is cataloged in the Library's collection as *MGRL 93-8682.
  • The sound quality is very good except for the audience comments, which are for the most part inaudible.
