He published translations of Dante in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and his work for the London Magazine in the 1820's acquainted him with many writers, including: Charles Lamb, William Hazlitt, Thomas De Quincey, Thomas Carlyle, John Clare, Thomas Hood, and Gabriel Rossetti.
