  • Whitney Moore Young, Jr. was a crusader for civil rights who for many years was the head of the National Urban League. He was born in Kentucky to a family that was part of the black educated elite. After receiving a Master's degree in social work from the University of Minnesota he became head of the Omaha, Nebraska Urban League. He joined the civil rights movement in the South when he was appointed dean of the Atlanta University School of Social Work. In 1961 he accepted the job as president of the National Urban League. He became associated with Martin Luther King, Jr. and gave the Urban League's support to the March on Washington in 1963.
