Summary
Part of Rêves d'étoiles, les grands ballets de Rudolf Noureev, a series of six documentaries. The focus of this program is the Paris Opéra Ballet's 1992 production of La bayadere for the stage of the Opéra Bastille, described in the words of the principal dancers, director and ballet master. The interviewees speak about working with Nureyev and about his illness and death. The dancers are seen at work with rehearsal mistress Ghislaine Thesmar; performance excerpts provide a glimpse of the finished product. Also on view are glimpses of the scenery and costume shops, and models by scene designer Ezio Frigerio, who describes his concept. The program also contains historical material about 19th century European interest in Indian dancing, Marius Petipa's creation of the ballet, and it's introduction to France in the Kirov Ballet's 1962 tour, in which Nureyev performed in Act III of La bayadère.
