Summary
These discs contain excerpts from a symposium devoted to Rudolf Nureyev sponsored by the Rudolf Nureyev Dance Foundation and the Trust for Mutual Understanding, and organized by the Institute for the History of the Arts and Culture Center International. The speakers discuss Nureyev's influence on classical ballet and particularly the role of the male dancer in traditional ballets; his careers at the Royal Ballet and the Paris Opera Ballet; his work habits and the qualities of his dancing; his interactions with Margot Fonteyn, Ninette de Valois, Mikhail Baryshnikov and George Balanchine; his experiments with modern dance and collaborations with Glen Tetley, Martha Graham and Murray Louis; his guest appearances with smaller companies and his influence on other dancers; his choreography; his interest in music and conducting; his interests outside of dance. Some segments are in French or Russian; segments in English and French are simultaneously translated into Russian. The discs also include brief video clips shown as part of the symposium and footage of the participants during breaks in the program.
