Collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, photographs, personal papers, tape recording, and printed matter documenting Moss's career as poet, essayist, dramatist, and editor. Correspondence contains letters, notes and postcards from contemporary poets, novelists, playwrights, and publishers, as well as friends and family. Manuscripts include holograph manuscripts, carbon typescripts, mimeograph or ditto copies, and working notes for Moss's plays, poems (some finished, some incomplete), short stories, critical essays, and reviews of and introductions to books. In addition, files contain both manuscript and printed versions of Moss's musical collaborations with Ned Rorem and programs from Rorem's recitals, at which many of the Moss-Rorem works were performed. Also present in the archive is Moss's large collection of photographs (mostly in black and white and taken by Rollie McKenna) of internationally famous 20th-century authors. Other records are personal papers of Moss which include address books and appointment calendars, ca. 1965-1987; journal notebooks (some from his school days), personal effects and mementoes; offprints, drawings and other artworks; royalty statements and publishing contracts; household files (many relating to medical and financial issues); and printed matter, such as copies of articles by and about Moss and clippings of miscellaneous articles by others.
