  • Sound the trumpets! A telegram from the Windsor Theatre to all of Israel in New York and throughout America. Friday 28 and Saturday 29 August, for the first time, "Isaac Elkhanan or the Count of Poland." Author Joseph Latayner, author of the "Jewish Melodies," "Kol Nidre" and "Job." Worthy public: Who has not heard the cherished name of Isaac Elkhanan? Who does not know the man that Jews, as did Christians, respect and deify? From the four corners of the earth where Jews are scattered from Poland and Russia and Germany to France, Turkey, and Italy, Jewish leaders have turned to Isaac Elkhanan with their problems. This man of genius and piety, before he became he became a Kovno rabbi, grew up in the small shtetl Novorodok where he suffered for his honesty and his goodness and even was imprisoned for a time. Only now, after his death, a certain Polish writer published a work in which he tells of the greatness of the Kovner wiseman. And as well, the story of how a Polish count recognzied his greatness and spread light onto the life of this genius. Now, our playwright Mr. A.M. Sharkanski, who has distinguished himself with his Yiddish dramas, has adapted and authored, especially for our company, a play that shall finally explain to the unknowing world the full biogrpahical tale of "Isaac Elkhanan."
