Note
  • ["The Delayed Wedding" is a play that will make a strong impression on the Jewish quarter; a play that will move even the stoniest of hearts and and will make the most depressed laugh. "The Delayed Wedding" presents scenes from the East Side that will remain in the memory of the audience. The Yiddish reader, especially the reader of "The Forwards" knows the work of Mr. Z. Lieben very well. Lieben has poured all of his strength into this play and has created scenes that make one shudder and, at other times, make one laugh. "The Delayed Wedding" will appeal to all classes: the simpler audience will enjoy the remarkable scenes and the intelligent audience member will enjoy the scenes of real life.]
  • [The story is simple: a young man, a student and as such a pauper--you should not suffer such a fate--becomes acquainted with a girl, who earns money, who is no dummy but is rather simple. She appeals to him, why shouldn't he appeal to her? He isn't on the fast-track to becoming a doctor, he is a normal young man and she is quite a good woman; he needs a means to study and she earns money--a match, right? But she already has a match, someone from home: together they worked side by side, lived as neigbors and stem from similar backgrounds. And from this point, unfolds a tragedy of the kind we often hear, that is not so distant from our lives. When the studious garcon becomes a doctor with a diploma and a practice with his own office--how can such a wife, that is more fitting for a smith, be fitting for him? But I must interrupt myself...I have so much more to say about this but it must be left for another day, when the play is actually performed.]
