- Summary
- Collection depicts African American radio personalities from the 1940s to 1970s, and African American-operated radio stations and radio broadcasts, mostly New York-based, from the 1940s and 1950s. The collection consists of studio and candid portraits of radio personalities, some of which were used for publicity purposes; radio interviews and studio performances, mostly musical, some of which were also used for publicity purposes; and views of a radio station mobile unit van, a radio station construction site, and a radio broadcasting class. Of note are a group of images (ca. 1950s) depicting WLIB (New York) radio personality Betty Granger interviewing guests or taking part in publicity events. Other individuals depicted in the collection include radio personalities Nora Holt, Hal Jackson and Bob Law; WLIB news director George W. Goodman; civil rights activists Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rev. Joseph Delaine; writer John Oliver Killens; actress Eartha Kitt; labor leader Benjamin McLaurin; boxer Archie Moore; Judge Miles Paige; and the Eva Jessye Choir during a performance that would later be broadcast on the BBC. Also included is a publicity photo of white radio performers Charles Correll and Freeman Gosden, in and out of character, from the "Amos 'n' Andy" radio program (ca. 1939).
