Excerpts from Lost in the stars are interspersed with commentary by David Drew, Peter Wexler, Dennis Russell Davies, and Betty Allen. The speakers discuss the 1950 Broadway show of the same name by Kurt Weill and Maxwell Anderson from which Drew adapted this concert suite version; the book Cry the beloved country, on which the show was based, and its subject, South Africa; Weill's music and the show's place in his career. Excerpts performed include Hills of Ixopo; Train to Johannesburg; Who'll buy?; and Cry, the beloved country.
