Summary
Television production of the play originally producted by the New York Shakespeare Festival Public Theater, about a Vietnam veteran who returns home blinded to face callous rejection by his own family. Tapes one and two contain the complete program. Tape three contains an alternate, "bloody ending" closing scene.

  • In July 1972 theatrical producer Joseph Papp received an $8 million contract to produce thirteen Shakespeare plays as well as contemporary works for the CBS television network over a four-year period. The first production, Much ado about nothing, directed by A.J. Antoon, was broadcast February 2, 1973. The second production, David Rabe's play Sticks and bones, aired on August 17, 1973. The broadcast had been postponed for several months due to conflict with the network's over viewers' sensitivity to the play's subject.
