Biography

1. Founded in 1969 by Philip Meister and Elaine Sulka, the Cubiculo, showcased young artists from across the performing arts spectrum. Located at 414 West 51st Street in New York City, the Cubiculo Theatre initially was used as an experimental space for their own troupe, the National Shakespeare Company. They also rented out the 75-seat space to dance and music groups, and, in 1972, qualified for a "performing arts presenting and service organizations" grant from the New York State Council on the Arts. Nicknamed "the Cube" by audiences, it was known as an affordable place to produce a show, and existed as a performance space into the 1990s.
