Summary

1. John McLaughlin interviews Actors' Equity president Colleen Dewhurst, as part of program devoted to the state of the American theater. Dewhurst responds to questions concerning the purpose of the Tony Awards; the seeming lack of originality in works currently being produced on Broadway; the proliferation of overseas productions and revivals, and the decline in the of production straight dramatic plays on Broadway; and the relationship between Broadway's economic conditions, including salaries of its personnel, to its problems. Interview continues with inclusion of a panel of theater professionals. The panelists speak on the need to increase government funding for the American theater; whether drama critics, such as New York Times drama critic Frank Rich, have undue power; and the high cost of tickets on Broadway. Tape ends abruptly before the discussion is completed.
