- Biography
- Charles Dodge (b. 1942) is an American composer of computer music. Dodge's interest in computer music began as an undergraduate at the University of Iowa. Dodge continued his music studies at Columbia University, where he took composition with Otto Luening, who, along with Vladimir Ussachevsky, had established the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center (CPEMC) in 1958. Dodge taught in the Columbia music department from 1970-1980, helping to develop the graduate program in computer music. During this period, he composed his most famous work, Earth's Magnetic Field (1970), a musical rendering of geophysical data. Later works, such as Speech Song (1972) and In Casando (1978), incorporated synthetic human speech. Dodge later founded the Center for Computer Music at Brooklyn College, City University of New York (CUNY), one of the first computer music centers in a public institution, while teaching at the CUNY Graduate Center. In 1993 he joined the faculty of Dartmouth College. He also co-authored (with Thomas A. Jerse) an influential textbook, Computer Music: Synthesis, Composition and Performance (1985).
