- Summary
- Profile of the New York Shakespeare Festival's free, open-air plays at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. Includes interview with producer Joseph Papp, clips of actors George C. Scott and James Earl Jones in rehearsal for The merchant of Venice, and footage and montage of still photos of audience members. Papp discusses the pros and cons of staging plays outdoors; his audience; the ramifications of producing plays for free, and his 1959 conflict with Parks Commissioner Robert Moses over the issue of charging admission; his belief in the need for a free theater; and his reasons for producing works by Shakespeare. Film ends abruptly.
