- Summary
- The collection depicts African Americans who were victims of lynching, mostly in the Southern United States from the 1930s to the early 1950s. The collection consists of views of lynching victims hanging from trees; a man who was lynched by a white mob while alledgedly in police custody; the bodies of two married couples, lynched by a white mob, being viewed by mourners in a funeral parlor; morgue photographs of a lynching victim and views of his grieving family; two prisoners who were shot by a white police officer while being transported by the officer to a site to have their rape convictions retried; and groups of white people who either participated in or observed a lynching. Also included are reproductions of newspaper articles (1867 and 1919 ) about mob violence against African Americans in the South.
