Summary
This program explores the Hand-drawn spaces project, a multi-media film, installation and computer project for which Merce Cunningham created choreography that was performed by dancers Jeannie Steele and Jared Phillips and converted into computer data through motion-capture technology. Moderator David Gere introduces the program, which begins with a 25 min. presentation of the project by Paul Kaiser and Shelley Eshkar, including video of the work in progress. A question-and-answer session follows. Merce Cunningham and Paul Kaiser discuss how the project differs from a dance for live performers. Cunningham and David Vaughan discuss Cunningham's interest in technology and how it influences his choreography. Kaiser and Eshkar further explicate technical and financial details of the project, and discuss future plans for using the technology, including the possibility of using it as a tool for documenting dance. Cunningham discusses the difference between this technology and the Life Forms computer software for human figure animation.
