Biography (note)
  • The pirates of Penzance, an adaptation of the 1879 operetta by W.S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan, was produced by Joseph Papp and New York Shakespeare Festival during summer of 1980 at Central Park's Delacorte Theater. The cast included Kevin Kline as the Pirate King, Rex Smith as Frederic, Linda Ronstadt as Mabel, George Rose as Major-General Stanley and Patricia Routledge as Ruth. Papp brought the show to Broadway in January where it played at the Uris Theatre and then moved to the Minskoff Theatre with most of the same cast, Estelle Parsons replacing Routledge. The Broadway mounting lasted for 772 performances. Cast replacements included Treat Williams for the Pirate King, Kaye Ballard for Ruth and Maureen McGovern and Pam Dawber for Mabel. The road company opened with Barry Bostwick, Jo Anne Worley, Pam Dawber and Andy Gibb, and James Belushi replaced Bostwick as the Pirate King. The original Broadway cast, with the exception of Angela Lansbury who played Ruth, performed in the 1983 film version released by Universal Pictures.
