"The first textual evidence of the existence of Yiddish dates from the early twelfth century, and by the early sixteenth century the broad range of genres that characterize other European literatures of the late Middle Ages and Renaissance are also represented in Old Yiddish. There has been no comprehensive anthology of this literature for more than a century, during which time the corpus has grown significantly due to the discovery of important manuscripts and printed editions. The present volume seeks to fill this gap by making accessible an extensive and representative selection of early Yiddish texts, drawn from the period 1100-1750. Recognized masterworks as well as hitherto unknown gems are included; the voices of women writers are heard; secular and religious content is balanced. The conventional literary genres of epic, lyric, and drama are included, but so are treatises on accounting and obstetrics - and even a fifteenth-century description of a carpenter's tool."--Jacket.
