  1. New York Shakespeare Festival producer Joseph Papp discusses the state of the theater and aspects of his career and life with Robert S. Hirshfield. Discussion topics include the lack of plays originating on Broadway; the trend since the 1960s and 70s toward the production of less socially conscious works on Broadway; the various factors contributing to Broadway's problems over the last several decades, including high ticket prices, its competition with television and film, the dearth of actors for the stage and lack of qood quality material for them to perform; American actors and their work in the theater; the making of a playwright; what keeps Papp interested in the theater; his experience working in film; his early years, including his exposure to Shakespeare in junior high school and his teacher, Eulalie Spence; enlisting in the Navy; his desire to see Shakespeare performed by American actors and his strong social commitment to producing plays for free; his current life in Greenwich Village and childhood in Brooklyn; his 1959 battle with Parks Commissioner Robert Moses over charging admission to his plays; developing a future constituency for the theater and his belief that theater should be part of the public school curriculum.
