Hanya Holm speaks with Susan Buirge about how she first came to study dance; studying with Mary Wigman in Dresden shortly after Wigman opened her school; the collaborative relationship among the students; the difficult economic conditions they and Wigman endured; the composition of Wigman's performing company; Holm's thoughts on Labanotation; Sol Hurok's sponsorship of Wigman's U.S. tour and subsequent role in founding a school to teach Wigman's technique in New York City [New York Wigman School of the Dance] [gap]; the performance-demonstrations given by the school in its early days at universities and high schools; her first summers teaching at Bennington [Bennington College School of the Dance]; her work, Trend, including casting, meaning, and her difficulty with creating the ending; reasons she has not revived Trend, including the complexity of the set [ends abruptly].
