Summary
Videodisc one: CBS news nightwatch, aired Channel 2, 2/22/84. Charlie Rose interviews theatrical producer Joseph Papp concerning a national theater. Papp discusses the current state of Broadway, including its high ticket prices, its loss of a local, middle-class audience, and its economic pressures to produce musicals in favor of serious dramatic plays. Papp also discusses his 1982 confrontation with real estate developers intent on destroying two historic Broadway theaters; his desire to form a national theater company which would perform in certain Broadway theaters; and his view that a diminished New York City theater audience must be reconstituted among its schoolchildren. Includes footage from Papp's 1982 demonstration.
Videocassette two: CBS news nightwatch, aired Channel 2, 2/22/84. Charlie Rose interviews theatrical producer Joseph Papp concerning a national theater. Entertainment tonight, aired Channel 7, 3/25/84. Coverage of the Save the Theaters demonstration and party at Lincoln Center for opening of Places please. Visual quality is extremely poor; playback of videocassette two is unadvisable.
