- Sun Ra was born Herman Poule Blount, but his legal name was Le Sony'r Ra.
- Sun Ra, born in Birmingham, Alabama, was an avant-garde jazz composer, bandleader (Sun Ra Arkestra), pianist, poet, and philosopher. He claimed to be a member of the "Angel Race," from the planet Saturn, to which he had been teleported and where angelic beings allowed him to experience unity with the cosmos. He would use the identity that he formed from this experience to forge the Afro-Futurism movement, the chief goal of which was world peace and the establishment of harmony among all beings. Beginning in the mid-1950s, Sun Ra led his "Arkestra," the name and members of which were in frequent flux.
