Summary
Documentary on Barry Joule, a mysterious figure known mainly for his friendships with artist Francis Bacon, model Toto Koopman, and dancer Rudolf Nureyev. The program delves into the Canadian-born Joule's association with each of them, noting his attraction to celebrity and glamour, his apparently sincere desire to assist his subjects, his love of self-documentation and self-promotion, and the material gains he has realized through cultivating celebrities, juxtaposed with conflicting reports of the true nature of his relationships and accusations of forgery, theft, and gold-digging. The program includes a visit to Nureyev's house on one of the privately-owned Isole dei Galli. The camera also accompanies Joule on visits to playwright Harold Pinter; Sir Nicholas Serota, director of the Tate; and the actor Terence Stamp.
