Dancer-choreographer James Payton, a former member of the José Limón Dance Company, discusses his first impressions of José Limón, whom he saw in a film of Doris Humphrey's dance work Lament for Ignacio Sánchez Mejías; learning a section of that work from Limón; his observations of Limón's teaching style at the Juilliard School of Music; Limón's sense of camaraderie with the all-male cast of The traitor; the influence of Betty Jones and Ruth Currier as dancers and teachers with Limón's company; the company's prevailing humanism; the creation of Limón's Missa brevis; his choreographic facility; Doris Humphrey's role as his artistic adviser; the physicality of his choreographic method; his reaction to Humphrey's death; his work There is a time; the musicality of Limón's and Humphrey's choreography; Limón's personal qualities; his influence on Payton's own choreography; Limón's contributions to the art of dance. The last part of the interview is obscured by audio problems.
