Summary
The records consist chiefly of letters received by the Lewisohns and general manager Helen Ingersoll from playwrights, actors and theater critics, as well as students and audience members, concerning Neighborhood Playhouse productions. Productions mentioned include The Silver Box by John Galsworthy; Salut au Monde, based on the poem by Walt Whitman; and Bitter Oleander, a translation of Federico García Lorca's Bodas de Sangre. Also present are copies of outgoing correspondence by the Lewisohns, and two holograph playscripts, The Touch of Pan by Algernon Blackwood and The Green Ring by Zinaida Gippius.

Biography
In 1915, sisters Alice and Irene Lewisohn founded The Neighborhood Playhouse, a theater and teaching facility for dance and drama that began as part of the Henry Street Settlement on New York City's Lower East Side. By 1920, professional actors replaced the amateur troupe of children and adults, and the Playhouse became known for its avante-garde productions. The neighborhood theater closed in 1927. In 1928, Alice Lewisohn Crowley, Irene Lewisohn and Rita Wallach Morgenthau established The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre, still in operation in New York City.
