Summary

Unedited footage recorded for the documentary Limón: a life beyond words. Interviews with José Limón's sisters Dora, Rosalva Landa (called Nana), and Guadalupe (called Lupe), the latter two interviewed together. They share reminiscences and anecdotes of José Limón in his youth, and his relationships with his parents and siblings. During the course of the discussion Limón is sometimes referred to by his nickname, Pepe. Also mentioned are "Pauline" [his wife, Pauline Lawrence] and "Chuck" [his assistant and close friend Charles D. Tomlinson]. Other siblings in the Limón family are Jesús, Florentino [referred to as "Tino"], Roberto, and Peter [also referred to as Pedro].

She also discusses the family's life in Mexico before their move to the U.S.; the early death of their mother, whom Limón adored; her own marriage to his best friend [referred to only as "Owen"]; her father's work as a musician and copyist; his talent as a pianist; her visit to his farm in Stockton, N.J. At ca. 40 min., the camera pans to their parents' wedding photograph on the wall.
• [Interview with Nana and Lupe] (ca. 14 min.) / Nana [at left] and Lupe [at right] discuss Limón's departure for New York City in 1928; his affection and care for his siblings; his talents as a visual artist and pianist as well as a dancer; their visit to him in New York in 1933; the family's musical heritage; their parents' personalities, and Limón's relationships with them; his relationship with Dora; his sense of humor; his lack of interest in movies, which led him to turn down job offers in Hollywood; their impressions of Doris Humphrey and Pauline Lawrence; his appearance at the White House during the presidency of Lyndon Johnson; their family's failure to conform to stereotypes of Mexicans. Nana maintained a correspondence with him from 1928 until his death.
